ogilvydigitalhealth:

Mapping your mouth

You can now enjoy brushing your teeth under the watchful eye of a dentist with the new Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected. (It’s quite a mouthful!) The new toothbrush, which launches in July, combines a variety of sensors in the handle to track how you’re brushing your teeth in real time. The data then feeds into an accompanying Android and IOS app via Bluetooth. While the user is busy brushing, the app then creates a 3D map of your mouth to show you which teeth you’re brushing well and which need your attention, even telling the user when they are scrubbing too hard. When the 2-mins of brushing are over (both the brush and the app have a timer), you can check how well you’ve done.

Six Layers Of Deficits Mean Retirement Disaster

Six Layers Of Deficits Mean Retirement Disaster:

bankerpigs:

If you want to know the true result of big government’s insatiable appetite for spending and the effects on our personal finances and lives please read this entire article. Warning: if you’re not already doing so, be sure to sit down first. This is a shocker!

By Daniel R. Amerman, CFA  Posted Thursday, 20 October 2011

There is a common but mistaken belief that the children and grandchildren of older Americans will be the ones who will be paying for today’s massive government deficits.  In this article we will look at six different layers of the deficit and unfunded government promises and put them into personal, per household terms in order to get to the truth of the matter.  This truth is that the deficits are far too large to be repaid by taxpayers decades from now, but will be instead effectively repaid through the destruction of retiree savings and retirement investment portfolios in the coming years.

The value of your checking account, the value of your IRA or Keogh, and the value of all your investments are - and will be - the true source of payment for deficits.  The end result could be a 95% reduction in value for all of our savings, retirement and otherwise, as we will illustrate step by step herein.

harvardbusinessschool:

How Small Investors Can Bet Big on Brands They Love

Brian Kenny: During the height of the Roman Republic, the state contracted with private companies to perform many public services. Like modern day corporations, these government contractors, called publicani, issued investment shares called particula, the equivalent of today’s over-the-counter shares. Every Roman citizen was invited to participate, and many saw it as their civic duty to invest in the empire they so loved.

Today, we’ll hear from Professor Luis Viceira about his case entitled LOYAL3: Own What You Love. I’m your host, Brian Kenny, and you’re listening to Cold Call.

Professor Viceira teaches MBA, doctoral students, and executives at Harvard Business School. He’s a financial economist, whose research focuses on investment management and capital markets. Luis, welcome.

Luis Viceira: Thank you so much.

Kenny: As I read this case, I thought this is my opportunity to get rich. I’m going to go to LOYAL3 and I’m going to begin investing. I learned a lot from reading this case. Maybe you can start just by setting the case up for us. Who’s the protagonist? What’s the scenario that the case begins with?

Viceira: The case starts by looking at the currency of the company. One of the founders of the company, Barry Schneider, is thinking what to do after taking the company to some initial and very significant successes. LOYAL3 is based on the initial vision of one of the founders, Stephen Klein, who’s an HBS graduate. He actually developed that vision when he was a student here at HBS. He had this idea of thinking about what he calls the connective owner, or the affinity investor, which is this idea that shareholders make better customers. He wanted to take that into a business model. The initial idea of LOYAL3 was actually to provide the consumers to be shareholders in a way that was cost effective for the small investors, the small consumers.

Amazon.com Inc is entering the student loan business in a partnership with Wells Fargo & Co, offering cheaper rates for loans to Amazon customers who pay for a “Prime Student” subscription.

The deal calls for Wells Fargo to shave half a percentage point from its interest rate on student loans to Amazon “Prime Student” customers, who also get benefits such as free two-day shipping and access to movies, television shows and photo storage.

“Amazon’s looking for increased membership in Student Prime. That’s what they want out of this deal,” John Rasmussen, head of Wells Fargo’s Personal Lending Group, said in an interview. “What we’re looking for is exposure to our products and services and awareness. That’s the extent of the relationship.”

yunistudies:

A guide to sleep better!

Hello, friends! :-)

I’ve decided to make a little post/guide on how to sleep better since sleep is definitely one of the most important things in life. So here we go!

1. Sleep cycles

Before you go to bed, make sure you have checked at sleepyti.me, when you should go to sleep. (Incase you don’t know this website, it tells you 3 times, at which you should fall asleep so you wake up at the end of a sleep cycle, which is about 90 minutes long. This will make you feel more awake in the morning!) But keep in mind that it takes an average human 14 minutes to fall asleep! I’m always in bed by 10:15 pm, so I’m sleeping by 10:30 pm, because I always get up at 6 am. :-)

2. Avoid electronics before going to sleep

It is proven that the light that our phones and laptops give us, makes falling asleep harder. So try and not check Twitter right before falling asleep (I always do it, I can’t help it but maybe you’re stronger than me, haha!) Maybe read a nice book and drink a tea.

3. Try to relax

Especially if you had a rough day, going to bed can be heaven like! So make it as chilled as possible. Light a candle, maybe take a nice warm shower or even a bath and just allow yourself to only care about you now.

4. Build a routine

Start a night routine, so it’s easier fo your body/mind to realise it’s bedtime.

5. Sleep the same amount of time

At least for me this is really important. I always get exactly 7 and a half hours of sleep every night. If I ever sleep less than this amount or more, I get a really bad headache.

6. Open the curtains before going to bed

Waking up to the sun shining into your face is always a nice thing, isn’t it?

7. If you’re awake, get up

This always happens to me on the weekend. I’m awake but I get up after like an hour of scrolling down my dashboard. For me, once again it’s really bad because I get a headache.

8. Sleep with your pet

My dog always gets freaking annoying as soon as she is awake but I’m not. She licks and face and jumps around the bed so I have to get up. It really helps on the weekend, because she is alway up at around 8:30 am.

9. Make sure you set that alarm!

You don’t want to come to late, do you?

10. Drink a glass ice cold water when you wake up

It refreshes you and also if you slept around 9 hours but you’re still tired as shit, you maybe should be dehydrated, so we see, water is freaking important!!

I hope this helped some of you, because even if cramming for a test sounds like a good idea, sleeping sounds like an even better idea! ;-))

Hope you all have a great day and a better sleep!

What It Takes To Become a Billionaire

brandmentlist:

“Shift your focus away from what you want (a billion dollars) and get deeply, intensely curious about what the world wants and needs. Ask yourself what you have the potential to offer that is so unique and compelling and helpful that no computer could replace you, no one could outsource you, no one could steal your product and make it better and then club you into oblivion (not literally). Then develop that potential. Choose one thing and become a master of it.  Choose a second thing and become a master of that.  When you become a master of two worlds (say, engineering and business), you can bring them together in a way that will a) introduce hot ideas to each other, so they can have idea sex and make idea babies that no one has seen before and b) create a competitive advantage because you can move between worlds, speak both languages, connect the tribes, mash the elements to spark fresh creative insight until you wake up with the epiphany that changes your life.

The world doesn’t throw a billion dollars at a person because the person wants it or works so hard they feel they deserve it. (The world does not care what you want or deserve.)  The world gives you money in exchange for something it perceives to be of equal or greater value: something that transforms an aspect of the culture, reworks a familiar story or introduces a new one, alters the way people think about the category and make use of it in daily life. There is no roadmap, no blueprint for this; a lot of people will give you a lot of advice, and most of it will be bad, and a lot of it will be good and sound but you’ll have to figure out how it doesn’t apply to you because you’re coming from an unexpected angle. And you’ll be doing it alone, until you develop the charisma and credibility to attract the talent you need to come with you.”

- Justine Musk (Elon Musk’s first wife)

Krugman on Hamilton

stoweboyd:

The interest in Alexander Hamilton, thanks to the musical and the buzz around women’s faces gracing various denominations of US currency — but not displacing the first secretary of the Treasury, thank goodness — have led Paul Krugman to reflect on Hamilton’s contributions to modern economic theory, specifically Hamilton’s First Report in the Public Credit in 1790.

Paul Krugman, In Hamilton’s Debt
Hamilton argued that the existence of a significant, indeed fairly large national debt would be good for business. Why? Because “in countries in which the national debt is properly funded, and an object of established confidence, it answers most of the purposes of money.” That is, bonds issued by the U.S. government would provide a safe, easily traded asset that the private sector could use as a store of value, as collateral for deals, and in general as a lubricant for business activity. As a result, the debt would become a “national blessing,” making the economy more productive.
This argument anticipates, to a remarkable degree, one of the hottest ideas in modern macroeconomics: the notion that we are suffering from a global “safe asset shortage.” The private sector, according to this argument, can’t function well without a sufficient pool of assets whose value isn’t in question — and for a variety of reasons, there just aren’t enough such assets these days.
As a result, investors have been bidding up the prices of government debt, leading to incredibly low interest rates. But it would be better for almost everyone, the story goes, if governments were to issue more debt, investing the proceeds in much-needed infrastructure even while providing the private sector with the collateral it needs to function. And it’s a very persuasive story to just about everyone who has looked hard at the evidence.
Unfortunately, policy makers won’t do the right thing, largely because they keep listening to fiscal scolds — people who insist that public debt is a terrible thing even when borrowing costs almost nothing. The influence of these scolds, their virtual veto over fiscal policy, somehow persists even though their predictions of soaring interest rates and runaway inflation keep not coming true.
The point is that Alexander Hamilton knew better.

If only we had a few Hamiltons running for office today. Perhaps they’d realize that with our ability to raise money at the lowest conceivable levels the country could be investing in the future: in infrastructure, the transition from fossil fuels to solar and other sustainable energy, new industry, and the education of our young.

But the do-nothings on the Right will continue to foil forward-leaning investments in a continuing cut-off-your-nose spitefulness that characterizes the establishment GOP.

Expert and non-expert attitudes towards (secure) instant messaging

Expert and non-expert attitudes towards (secure) instant messaging:

privacyandtechnology:

Paper by Alexander De Luca, Sauvik Das, Martin Ortlieb, Iulia Ion, and Ben Laurie.

Abstract:

“In this paper, we present results from an online survey with 1,510 participants and an interview study with 31 participants on (secure) mobile instant messaging. Our goal was to uncover how much of a role security and privacy played in people’s decisions to use a mobile instant messenger. In the interview study, we recruited a balanced sample of ITsecurity experts and non-experts, as well as an equal split of users of mobile instant messengers that are advertised as being more secure and/or private (e.g., Threema) than traditional mobile IMs. Our results suggest that peer influence is what primarily drives people to use a particular mobile IM, even for secure/private IMs, and that security and privacy play minor roles.”

Rumor: Google is working on two Nexus smartwatches

A new report suggests Google is working on two smartwatches that may be Nexus devices for release after it debuts new Nexus phones.

Like the Nexus phones, the watches are believed to be essentially the same internally, but with different screen sizes. Codenamed Angelfish and Swordfish, it seems Google is leaning toward the round screen for Android Wear.

Co-op Bank Shows Commitment to Financial Sector

madelinesmithblr:

The Co-op Group sent out a clear message to its competitors this week by appointing a new chairman and finance director for its struggling banking arm. Richard Pym, this incoming chairman, currently runs a bailed-out banking division for the government and hopes to ensure that customers will be given a genuine alternative choice to the traditional banks. The new finance director, Richard Pennycook, is currently finance director at supermarket chain Morrison and is joining the Co-op on an interim basis for the whole group.

Pennycook brings with him an impressive track record which includes the successful four-year turnaround plan after a troubled takeover of Safeway. The latest changes at the Co-op come after former B&Q CEO, Euan Sutherland replaced life-long Co-op employee Peter Marks as CEO of the whole Group. CEO Sutherland has praised the move to secure Pym, coupled with the appointment of former HSBC banker Niall Booker, saying the bank was now “in very good hands.“

Pym has promised to focus his energies on strengthening the bank’s balance sheet and resolving any underlying issues which may be affecting its performance. There has been a spate of high profile moves within the banking sector in recent months after RBS boss Robert Hester announced his intention to step down and the successful sale of the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Limited by CEO Mike Aynsley and his board left Ireland with one less bad bank to resolve. Read more about this by clicking here.

It appears that the UK and Irish economies are now moving away from a period of consolidation and are now in the critical period of planning strategic growth in both their corporations and their economies. Government schemes which reduce risk for banks are now in place encouraging them lend to small businesses and first time homebuyers in order to stimulate growth in the economy and restore trust in the financial sectors. While the level of trust in the financial markets are at historic lows, there are signs of growth and by moving to install the right people to continue this growth, there is a feeling that the upward trends are set to continue.

Talking With Your Hands Makes You Learn Things Faster (We Knew It!)

boussettastuff:

talking with hands

“Thanks to René Descartes and a pantheon of very serious dead white men, Western intellectual history has long maintained that thought is something that happens only in the kingdom of the brain; it’s just the body’s job, as educator Ken Robinson famously quipped, to bring the brain from meeting to meeting. But your hands suggest otherwise.”

App lets shoppers scan, pay and leave without queuing
